Devi Durga Temples - Vaishno Devi Temple

Devi Durga Temple
Vaishno Devi is one of the most holy Hindu temples. It is located in the hills of Vaishno Devi, Jammu & Kashmir. The temple is situated near the town of Katra, in the Reasi district in Jammu & Kashmir. Approximately, about eight million people visit the temple every year. The ‘Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’ maintains the sacred shrine.

History and discovery of the holy shrine – Maa Vaishno Devi was born to Ratnakar Sagar and his wife. They lived in the southern part of India. Right from her childhood, she showed an insatiable appetite for knowledge. She started to peep into her inner self in order to attain more knowledge. Soon she found out that only meditation and penance can enlighten in the true sense. Thus, she relinquished all homely comforts and went deep into the forest to meditate. She was called Trikuta then.

She was born from Lord Vishnu’s lineage and hence she was later called as Vaishnavi. She prayed to Lord Vishnu, in the form of Rama. Coincidentally, Rama reached that place while he was searching for Sita. He saw the girl, meditating deeply. Trikuta told Rama that she had already accepted Him as her husband. But Rama told her that during this incarnation He had vowed to stay faithful to only Sita. But Rama was so pleased with her devotion that he promised her that during Kaliyuga he would re-appear as Kalki and would marry her.

Meanwhile, Rama asked Trikuta to meditate in the cave found in the Trikuta range of Manik mountains in North India. Rama gave her a bow and an arrow, a troop of monkeys, and a lion, for her protection. Vaishnavi observed the ‘Navaratra’ for the victory of Rama over Ravana. Hence, the ritual of reading Ramayana during the Navaratra started. Rama forecasted that Vaishno Devi would become famous and immortal, all would sing her praise. This happened in reality.

Description of the holy shrine- Vaishno Devi is widely regarded as the Devi who fulfills every wish of her devotees. She resides in the holy cave located in the folds of the Trikuta (having three peaks) mountain. Devotees throng the shrine from all parts of India and abroad.

The holy cave is situated at an altitude of 5200 feet. A 12 km long trek is required from the base camp of Katra to reach the cave. There are no idols or statues inside the cave. There are three natural rock formations called Pindies. Darshans are open round the clock through out the year.

How to reach Vaishno Devi –
The holy Bhawan houses the Sanctum Sanctorum- the holy cave which is the ultimate destination of the pilgrims.

Vaishno Devi can be reached after making a steep 12 km trek from Katra. Several porters and ponies are available at Katra for hire.

By rail, one needs to reach Jammu. Jammu is well connected with all major railway stations in India, including Mubai, Delhi and Kolkata. From Jammu, buses and private cars are available to reach Katra.

The Jammu airport too is a busy one, with frequent flights (to and fro) being available. Accommodation is not a problem at Katra. Rooms, dormitories etc are available in abundance.

One should be careful while choosing the time of visiting Vaishno Devi. During winter, the Bhawan area is shivering cold. Blankets etc are available, though.
