With the painting of the eye, Goddess Durga is brought to life. The day starts with the sound from Mahalaya, mainly in the recorded voice of late Birendra Krishna Bhadra. This day marks the beginning of the Devipakshya or the start of Durga Puja. It is believed that Devi Durga strats her journey from Kailash to Earth on this day. On this day Hindus perform Tarpan to pay homage to their ancestors.
