Ganesh E-puja

Sri Ganesh
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the auspicious day which marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. On this day Shiva declared his son Ganesha to be superior of all Gods. This festival is observed during the Hindu month of Bhadra (mid August- mid September). The festival lasts for 10 days and ends on the day of ‘Ananata Chaturdashi’. It is celebrated by Hindus all over. In India, it is celebrated in all the states. But it is more widely celebrated in states like Maharasthra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
How the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is observed- A life-like clay model of Lord Ganesha is prepared well in advance to the festival. The size of the clay model varies. It may vary from ¾th of an inch to over 25 feet in height. On the day of the festival it is placed on raised platforms in homes or in exquisitely decorated outdoor pandals (tents) for the mass to view and pay their homage. The priest invokes life into the idol while the chants go on. This ritual is called ‘pranapratisthha’ (giving life). After this the offerings start. Rice-flour preparation, red flowers, coconut etc are used. The idol is then anointed with red sandal wood (rakta-chandan). Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and Ganesh stotra are chanted. For 10 days, Lord Ganesha is worshipped in this manner.
On the 11th day, the idol is taken through the streets, accompanied by a huge procession .They dance and sing throughout the journey. The image is immersed in a river or a sea, symbolizing the ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his home in Kailash. It is believed that he takes away with him the misfortunes of all the people. All join in this final procession shouting "Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya" (O father Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the idol to the river to immerse it.
There is a serious concern which encircles this joyous festival. It is regarding the negative externality created when the idol made of plaster of paris is immersed in the water. This creates water pollution and hence environmental degradation. Of late, a solution has been found out (though it is yet to be in use in a widespread manner). If the idol is made of paper mache, the pollution created is negligible. Moreover, the idols would cost less. Hopefully, this solution will be used more often in the near future and a fully affirmative celebration can be experienced.
