  Bidhan Chandra Roy

Bidhan Chandra Roy, the man who gave a new dimension to the social, industrial and structural upliftment of Bengal after India became independent, was born in Patna, Bihar on July 1st 1882.After a phenomenal stint as a student he chose to become a doctor and help his fellow countrymen, most of whom

either couldn't afford to go to a doctor or had fear from modern medicines. Bidhan Chandra wanted to eradicate the fear and had a dream of making proper medical attention cheap and readily available. After completing his course in medicine, he took up steps to realize his dreams; He excelled in his profession and soon

was popular in Calcutta medical circles. He was a phenomenal physician with an eagle eye to diagnose diseases. Later he had joined politics to do good to his countrymen. In 1923 representing the Swaraj Party,he had defeated

stalwarts like Sir S.N. Banerjee who belonged to the moderates. In 1947 he was elected as a member of the legislature from the Calcutta University constituency. On 23rd Jan 1948, he was elected the chief minister of West Bengal. His tenure saw Bengal making tremendous advancements in every sector. New industries came into being; industrial complexes were established along with dream township projects such as Kalyani. Even Salt Lake, the extension of Calcutta was his vision. He set up numerous hospitals and made medical help and advice available to even the remotest parts of Bengal. Described by Pundit Nehru as " a giant among men", Dr. Roy passed away suddenly on his 81st birthday. It was a bolt from the blue to all the people of Bengal. The president of India, Dr. Radhakrishnan and Governor of Bengal, Ms. Naidu was at his bedside within minutes of his death. Dr. Roy was a philanthropist who dreamt of a better Bengal and took up measures to make his dreams come true. His death was a disaster to the people of Bengal who took him as a father figure. He was awarded the "Bharat Ratna", the highest civilian award of the country.
