  Shyamaprasad Mukherjee  

Shyamaprasad Mukherjee was born of illustrious parents on 6th July 1901. His father was Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee the noted educationist and mother Jogomaya Debi. Shyamaprasad inherited the family background in education. He stood first both in graduation and masters and then  

 
 

 moved on to take a degree in law. Here too stood first. He married Sudha Debi in 1923 & the next year he joined Calcutta High Court as an advocate. He was elected Fellow of Calcutta University & was replaced as a member of its syndicate when Sir Ashutosh died in May. In 1926 he left for England where he studied law. He represented Calcutta University in the International University meet while in London. After becoming a barrister he returned to Calcutta and represented Congress as a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. After the death of his wife in1933 he was heart broken but worked extensively to forget the past. From 1934 he was elected twice as the Vice-Chancellor of C.U. 

 
     
   
     
     He was elected member of I.I.S.Bangalore & received honorary D.Lit from C.U. & honorary L.L.D. from B.H.U. In 1939 he joined the Calcutta session of the Hindu Mahasabha. He later became president of the Bengal Hindu Mahasabha. He entered the freedom struggle & was jailed for breaking the law under Defense of India Act. In between 1943-45 he held the post of the president of the Bengal Asiatic Society. In 1944 he started an English daily 'Nationalist'. In 1945 he founded Hindustan National Guards to help out the victims of riot. In 1947 Dr Mukherjee joined the 1st cabinet of independent India under Pundit Nehru as the minister of Industry & Supply. In 1951 he founded a radical national party called 'JanaSangha'.  
 

In 1952 after being elected to the parliament, he formed an alliance called the National Democratic Party & created pressure upon the government. On 20th June 1953 while on a political visit to Kashmir he was arrested for breaking law & while in custody died a mysterious death.
