Kaal is predictable but also real. Predictable because it takes just a few scenes to predict what will unfold. Real because there is a growing number of such women-not too far from where we are-who walk the way of all flesh and yet, in a way, live life on their terms.

The opening scene shows the four protagonists, long legs, manicured toes, bare backs and plush hotel rooms. Beneath the entire gleam lies the grubby world of sexploitation- but not without its pleasures and perks.
The four girls land up in flesh-trade territory driven by different reasons. At no point are the four protagonists seen wallowing in self-pity or lamenting their fate. They know there is no escape from this world, so they just go with the flow. They live out of hotel rooms, shopping malls and beauty parlors.
The two settings for the film are Calcutta and North Bengal. The green paddy fields, the Kaash flower and the Mahayana River come alive with Rana Dasgupta’s cinematography.
Sandhya Shetty as the wife betrayed stands out. Chandrayee too does an admirable job, first as a shy Muslim woman who is tortured, and then as a glamorous prostitute. Rudranil as a village pimp dies a decent job.
