Most of the artists are fighting the odds to complete the orders of Puja Committees that start pouring in after RathYatra in the month of June-July.Though unhappy with the Government’s inaction and false promises regarding better work stations, these artisans are focused on delivering the best to their customers working day and night |

Space crunch has driven many artisans who have about 70 Durga idols to complete to seek rented places at high prices while other not so affluent patuas jostle in their shanties to give shape to the beautiful Durga Pratimas and which find space on the western side of Kalighat road covered with plastic sheets as they often weather the frequent downpours. |
With just about a month left for the much awaited Durga Puja, Puja Committees and clubs have started giving shape to their plans in creating mandaps and pandals replicating well known structures or simply giving vent to their imagination to create the best ever Durga mandap to bag this year’s award. 2008 has seen some of the worst cases of terror attacks in the country and so have the Durga Samities decided on non-violent themes. The Durga Goddess of Sodepur Pragati Sangha will lay down her arms except the trishul and will hold lotus flowers in her other 8 hands while Mahishasur will be dead with no blood marks on him.
The famous 41 Palli will have a goddess who will shun the trishul too and will be housed in a forest, created with 60,000 tree parts, inspired by ‘ Bonbibi’, worshipped in the Sunderbans. The mandap is to be decorated with 30 varieties of trees. The main attraction of this Puja will be Sorab Sardar’s woodwork collection. Inspired by Abanindranath Tagore, Sorab had started collecting different tree parts such as stumps,
roots
and bark that appealed to him. His creations have given shape to many
forms such as peacocks to porcupines, poodles to dinosaurs and many other
animals, inspired by his numerous trips to the forests for the last 40
years.
Other themes such as mandaps decorated with bamboo artworks with beautifully
crafted origami finds its place in Vivekananda Park Athletic Club. Haidevpur
Adarsha Samity will sport the uncommon theme, Bengali delicacy ‘narkoler
mishti’. Vivekananda Sporting Club has a unique theme; they propose to
use 6,000 vermillion cases or sindoor containers to highlight the tribal
women who were the pioneers to use sindoor.
Dinajaner Sarbojonin Matripuja will celebrate its platinum jubilee year
by impersonating the Lord’s balcony to mark the silver jubilee of the
Indian cricket team’s World Cup triumph.
