A milestone to touch

In the midst of the clamour of pre-puja festivities, Calcutta's first

community puja is silentley approaching its centinery milestone. Bhowanipur's Balram Bose Ghat Road celebrated its first Durga Puja in the year 1910. Set to reach the historic milestone, Bhowanipur Sanatan Dharmatsahini Sabha is gearing up to celebrate Durgapuja with all the gradeur in the same place which was once a preserve of the Babus. It was a famour baroyari Durgapuja where author Premendra Mitra as well as mathematician Kesab Chandra Nag and Justice Shayama Prasad Mukherjee partook in the festivities. The Durga idol is being made in the thakurdalan which faces the twin Shiva temples that date back to the time Balram Bose constructed the ghat. It is said thatthe place used to

be a crematorium where satidaha took place in the year 1829.This century old Baroyari DurgaPuja had its share of entertainment too. Jatra, Kalikirtan, Chandigaan and shehani recitals were a part of the festivities. Today it still reflects some part of the grandeur of the yester years and with just 2 years to touch the centinary mark, organisers are definitely planning ahead for the big day.

Safe Puja

Organizers and Durga Puja Committees all over the city are attending workshops to fight pandal fire. Organized by the fire department, this year they have done away with the instructions in pamphlets and have instead set up a 2 day hands on training workshop for combating Puja pandal fire. Since the feasibility of a fire engine pushing past the Puja crowd to reach the blazing Puja pandal can be difficult, various fire stations in the city has decided to educate the Durgapuja committee members.
