It's been two decades from the time when 'Mahanayak' Uttam Kumar, the most admired Bengali performer left. The saddest thing is that conventional Bengali cinema till can’t recover from the fatal blow of his downfall.The person, who touched such dizzying stature, began his life as an average Bengali.

The person, who touched such dizzying stature, began his life as an average Bengali. He was a recreational stage actor in his early life and slowly made cautious introduction to the silver screen. For a short time he performed in specialized theatres. In 1955, he staged Shyamali in Star Theatre. His first film took place in 1953, with Suchitra Sen in ‘Saarey Chuattar’. The superhit film flashed off the incomparable duo of Uttam-Suchitra, who gifts us hit after hit movies, like Harano Sur, Sagarika, Saptapadhi, Pathey Holo Deri and many more.

But Uttam Kumar's romantic acting were not restricted to only Suchitra Sen. He was also in the co-starring with all the famous actresses of that age, namely Supriya Devi, Mala Sinha, Madhabi Mukherjee, Sharmila Tagore and Aparna Sen and all with a success. His other popular films are Shilpi, Sahib Bibi Gulam, Antony Firangee, Chowringhee, Chaddhabeshi, Agnishwar, Jay-Jayanti, Amanush, Debdas, Sabyasachi and Satyajit Ray's Chiryakhana and Nayak. The most interesting fact is that he could easily fit into any character, be it the romantic lover, or the bossy egotistical hero, or the helpless lover. He was also very natural and same enthusiastic in humorous, dreamy or heartbreaking roles.

Uttam Kumar was the actor, who first receives the Best Actor Award from Indian Government for his brilliant acting in Chiriakhana directed by Satyajit Ray, and Antony Firingi (1967). He was at the same time, an artist, director, producer and a good singer. He also performed in some Hindi movies like "Chhoti si Mulaqat" (with Vyjayantimala Bali), "Amanush" (with Sharmila Tagore), "Ananda Ashram" (with Sharmila Tagore), "Kitaab" and "Dooriyan”.

While performing in the Bengali film Ogo Bodhu Shundori in 1980, he expired of a massive heart attack at the age of 54.
Uttam Kumar's funeral – grieved by thousands of Bengalis were in the procession of his last journey. The name gradually becomes the part of the Bengali household. Even today, Bengalis still live on the nostalgic memories of Uttam Kumar.
