  Ma Kali devotee Sri Kamalakanta Bhattacharya  
Kamalakanta Bhattacharya was a poet who gained popularity and prominence during the turn of the century from the 18th to the 19th. He was also one of the first known Kali devotees who through all his life Ma Kali devotee Sri Kamalakanta Bhattacharya
seek for Maa Kali’s grace and blessings. Kamalakanta was born in Bardhaman, India. His father was a Brahmin priest who died when Kamalakanta was a boy. His mother had to embrace a lot of hardship to lead her and her son’s life. But she never compromised with her son Kamalakanta’s education.

Kamalakanta received higher education and since he was an intelligent student, he easily managed to make progress through his student life. He studied Sanskrit but showed indications of serious inclination towards poetry and music. He was initiated into spiritual practice by Chandra Sekhar Goswami. He was always interested and attracted towards spirituality. He received initiation into Tantric yoga from a Tantric yogi named Kenaram Bhattacharya.

Kamalakanta took his father’s profession. To meet ends, he also started a small school. But it was his songs which made him famous. To be precise, he earned fame as a singer-poet. The Maharaja of Bardhaman, Tej Chandra, asked Kamalakanta to be his Guru and appointed him as a court advisor.
By then Kamalakanta’s devotion towards Kali became well known. He composed many devotional love poems dedicated to the Mother. Kamalakanta in a way followed Ramprasad Sen’s footsteps, both in his poetry and in his lifestyle. Kamalakanta’s poems depict Maa Kali as the epitome of heroism; in the poems she appears as a force beyond any kind of bondage and/or limitation.

Kamalakanta’s poems were later sung by the great Kali devotee Ramkrishna himself. Kamalakanta’s songs are widely regarded as and famous for describing the direct vision of God. Kamalakanta breathed his last in 1821.
